TWO men have appeared in court charged with breaking into a house and demanding cash from a couple.

Police were called to a house in Brooks Lane, Bosham, near Chichester, in West Sussex, on Friday following reports that a man and a woman at the address were allegedly being threatened by men, who had forced their way into the property.

Shortly after 7pm police arrested two men nearby on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

Russell Andrew Carruthers, 35, of Upper Bognor Road, Bognor Regis has been charged with aggravated burglary, common assault and causing £5,000 worth of criminal damage.

Kevin Richard Tarrant, 48, of Bracklesham Lane, Bracklesham Bay, Chichester, has been charged with burglary.

The men, who are both unemployed, appeared at Worthing Magistrates Court, on Monday, but did not enter a plea to the charges.

They have been remanded in custody and ordered to appear at Lewis Crown Court on January 4.
