Crime panel vows to hold Hampshire police commissioner to account

Members of Hampshire Police and Crime Panel (PCP) say they are keen to work closer together to support and challenge Michael Lane, who was elected to the commissioner job this year.

Members have agreed to first scrutinise the commissioner’s performance against key priorities in his Police and Crime Plan. The next scrutiny session in October will look at domestic abuse, followed by a session in January next year, to examine the topic of restorative justice.

The panel will also work closer with the commissioner to provide feedback on his performance following the priorities set out in his manifesto, which will form part of the priorities in his plan.

Over the coming months, the panel will make recommendations on the effectiveness of Mr Lane’s actions to reduce domestic abuse, suggest opportunities and to enhance support for victims of domestic abuse.

Councillor David Stewart, who was re-elected at the meeting as panel chairman for a fifth year, said: ‘These proactive scrutiny sessions provide the Police and Crime Panel with an opportunity to represent the voice and expectations of residents, and relay their feedback to the Police and Crime Commissioner.

‘I am pleased we will be able to play an even greater role in supporting the PCC, moving forward.’
