Customer chased robber out of a betting shop when they tried to get access to a safe

A member of staff was threatened with a hammer during an attempted robbery at a bookmaker in Waterlooville. 

A masked suspect threatened the staff member with a claw hammer at the Betfred in The Precinct at 8.45pm last night (September 4), demanding access to the safe.

But the robbery was foiled when a customer chased the suspect out of the store. 

Officers investigating have released CCTV images of the suspect.

Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘We're investigating an attempted robbery at Betfred in The Precinct, Waterlooville, at about 8.45pm last night (Tuesday 4 September).

‘The person in the CCTV threatened a member of staff with a claw hammer and demanded access to the safe.

‘The suspect was chased out of the shop by a customer, after the staff member said she didn't have access to the safe.

‘While the suspect's face is covered, we're sharing the image as we think somebody may be able to identify the suspect from the clothing.’
