A CYCLIST snatched a woman’s handbag from the front basket of her bike.

At about 11.15am on Saturday, a 78-year-old woman was cycling north along Stoke Road, Gosport, when a man on a bike cycled past her.

He then took the woman’s handbag from the front basket and cycled off.

The victim and another witness chased the thief, who escaped down either Peel Road or Avenue Road.

The suspect was white, aged between 24 and 35, with cropped hair and a light-coloured top.

PC Alison Smith said: ‘No force was used, and this appears to be an opportunistic crime.

‘It was committed in daylight hours when other people may have witnessed the offence, or may have seen the offender prior to the incident.

‘To prevent incidents of a similar nature, personal possessions should always be hidden from view.’

Anyone with information should call Gosport police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
