THE fate of under-threat police station front desks in our area is to be decided later this month.

Hampshire Police Authority members are to thrash out plans which include more than halving the number of front desks in our area.

As reported in The News, of the 11 stations in our area three – Southsea, Hayling Island and Petersfield – are to shut when Safer Neighbourhoods Teams have another base in the area to work from.

But front desks at the other eight are under threat as Hampshire Constabulary battles to save £50m by 2015.

If the closures go ahead there could be just one front desk in Portsmouth, one for Fareham and Gosport and one for Havant and Waterlooville.

Front counters at Park Gate, Gosport, Havant, Waterlooville and Fareham are under review.

In Portsmouth front desks at Fratton, Cosham, and Portsmouth Central – which currently opens 24 hours a day – are under threat. A decision is expected to be made on September 27.
