AN operation by trading standards found a third of traders tested were willing to sell cigarettes, alcohol and fireworks to children.

Volunteers aged 15 and 16 were asked by West Sussex Trading Standards to go into 18 shops across the county.

Seven failed the test.

In some cases no questions at all were asked of the volunteers, let alone requesting proof of age.

Councillor Christine Field, in charge of public protection, said: ‘In this exercise two shops sold both fireworks and cigarettes to the volunteer in the same purchase.’

The investigation continues, but sanctions could include shops having their alcohol licence revoked.
