A 96-YEAR-OLD war veteran has been left devastated after distraction burglars stole £700 from his home.

Two men called at his property in Hewett Road, North End, Portsmouth, at about 1pm on Thursday

The men spoke about some work they could do on the outside of his house. Once inside they said that some damp on the ceiling in his living room also needed work.

The men left before doing any work and the homeowner realised his wallet containing £700 was missing.

Det Con Andrew Larder said: ‘The homeowner is a 96-year-old decorated war veteran who has outlived his wife and children. Anyone who has any conscience or respect for this man should return the money and hand themselves in. Anyone who may help us identify the men responsible, or witnessed the incident, is asked to contact us.’

The suspects are white, aged between 40 and 60 and about 6ft. One man has grey hair and the other has white hair and wore a large black, white and red checked lumberjack shirt.

Call police on 101.
