Dopey burglar jailed for stealing medals from Havant home

A SEASONED burglar has been jailed for his latest raid on a family home.

Slumped in the dock Raymond Brain was handed a 29-month term after a judge heard he took jewellery, a laptop, credit car and Radley handbag.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard police diamond and golden jubilee medals belonging to the residents' great-grandfather were also taken.

DNA left on a tin in the four-bedroom house in Leigh Road, Havant, led police to 37-year-old Brain, who has 58 convictions for 115 offences.

Sentencing, judge Roger Hetherington said: 'You have got an appalling record for someone the age of 250

'You had the option before of alcohol treatment requirement.'

Due to Brain's previous burglary convictions he was subject to a minimum three-year term, less 20 per cent for pleading guilty.

The burglary by Brain, of Binsteed Road, Buckland, had been discovered while the elderly owners were abroad in Greece on holiday.

A neighbour looking after the property had discovered the house hand been ransacked and alerted relatives.

Brain, who is a carer for his partner, will serve half the jail term before he is eligible for release.

He admitted burglary.
