Drink-driver jailed for killing man riding pony and trap

A DRINK-driver has been sentenced after a man was killed in a collision.

Oliver Wareham, of Rownhams Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to causing the death of William Gaskin by driving without due care and attention while over the prescribed limit.

Winchester Crown Court heard how the 29-year-old’s Volkswagen Bora was in a collision with a pony and trap on Portsmouth Road near Bursledon on March 26 last year. Mr Gaskin, 33, from Guildford, was travelling in the trap and suffered life-threatening injuries and he was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died a short time later.

Wareham was sentenced to four years and four months and disqualified from driving for five years, with an extended retest.
