Drink-driving sailor clocked at 120mph on M27 overtook unmarked police car

Mark Waiganjo, 34, was driving westbound at Fareham after a leaving do held by his colleagues as he was due to move to Faslane.

The sailor, of Bucksey Road, Gosport, was spotted and pulled over just before 9pm on January 31.

Portsmouth magistrates yesterday fined him £339 after hearing he admitted to officers straightaway he had been drinking.

Waiganjo pleaded guilty to drink-driving. He was not charged with speeding.

A breath test revealed he had 45 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Prosecutor Graham Heath said: ‘Clearly it’s a very high speed, one which was much aggravated because he was found to be over the drink-drive limit.

‘He co-operated with providing samples.’

Mr Heath said police did not find his driving to be erratic in any way other than his speed.

The sailor, who is still serving in the Royal Navy, must pay a £339 fine, £85 prosecution costs and £34 surcharge.

Waiganjo, who represented himself, told magistrates colleagues had thrown a leaving do for him.

Standing in the dock, Waiganjo said: ‘They decided to hold a party for myself and I think I believe I took a little bit too much when I drove my car.

‘I’m still in the navy, this is my last draft.’

If he completes a drink-driver impairment course, his ban will be reduced.
