John Murphy, 52, of Dennistoun, Glasgow, vanished in May last year.

Last month his family said they believed there had been a sighting of him in Portsmouth.

But Police Scotland said this had not been confirmed by detectives.

Mr Murphy’s family spent the weekend in Southampton, where he had a past connection, and also visited Portsmouth.

Posters were seen tied to lampposts around the Pompey centre.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: ‘This is something the family have been doing down south. We are focusing on other areas.

‘There’s nothing to suggest or substantiate the claim that he’s down there but they are doing whatever they can.’
