Mr Gates was reported missing after his pet dog was found on farmland close to Drumnadrochit, near Loch Ness, six weeks ago.

Police Scotland then traced his vehicle and found it abandoned nearby.

A huge search and rescue operation was launched.

Mr Gates’ father Malcolm said: ‘We would like to thank the police and everyone who searched for Jason, refusing to give up.

‘We’re pleased the search has come to a conclusion and we can get closure.

‘There is sadness but also relief that he has been found.

‘The police are 100 per cent sure it’s him.

‘We will probably go up to Scotland ourselves this week.’

Mr Gates said police have told him it is likely his son died of hypothermia.
