A MAN has been arrested following an attempt to rob a teenage girl of her mobile phone in Fareham.

The man, a 33-year-old from Fareham, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of attempted robbery after an incident on Thursday.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

The arrest was made after a 15-year-old was talking home from school shortly after 5.30pm when she was approached by a man she did not know.

Police say the man is alleged to have pushed her to the ground and tried to steal her phone in an alleyway near an area locally known as The Meadows.

The girl, from Fareham, received cuts and bruises but nothing was reported stolen following the ordeal.

Investigating officer Det Con Katie Wakefield said: ‘This assault happened in an alleyway close to Soccer City.

‘There would have been many people leaving work and making their way home at the time.

‘They may have seen the school girl or suspect prior to the attack, or the suspect make off on a bicycle after the attack.’

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact CID at Fareham police station on 101.
