Attempt murder probe: second man arrested

A POLICE officer was assaulted and five men were arrested in a mass brawl.

The trouble began in the Six Bells pub, in North Street, Havant.

When one of the doormen attempted to escort men off the premises a fight broke out near the front door and spilled out to the pavement.

As more people became involved police were called and several teams of officers in cars and vans descended on the street, busy with drinkers, to try to break up the fight.

One eyewitness, who didn’t want to be named, said: ‘It was mad out there. I’ve never seen so many police cars and vans. They were in the pub for about half an hour but there was fighting in the street too.

‘The last time I can remember something like that in Havant was in the 2002 World Cup when England played Argentina and loads of people went on a rampage through the town centre.’

The fight kicked off at around 11.15pm on Saturday night. Five men have been arrested, all from Havant. Two 21-year-old men and two 22-year-old men have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a third 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a police officer. All have been bailed until March 10.
