HAMPSHIRE police have splashed out £1.5m on a new city headquarters.

The deal with Hampshire County Council was completed after contracts were signed on Friday as part of the force’s £83m estates development programme.

The move will see police move its headquarters at West Hill, Winchester, which are deemed not fit for purpose, to nearby Mottisfont Court.

Refurbishment works are due to start next year.

The building will house up to 200 headquarters staff from the end of 2013.

The West Hill base is due to be put up for sale next year.

A force spokeswoman said: ‘The purchase is the first significant acquisition of the force’s Estate Development Programme, which aims to provide modern and appropriate facilities to fit the current and future policing needs, while providing the best possible service to the public and achieving value for money.’
