TWO men  have been bailed to appear at the crown court over an alleged £1m tax dodge scam.

Jean-Francois Marc and Morgan Moiteaux are accused of trying to smuggle cigarettes into the UK through Portsmouth’s ferry port in April.

Marc, 49, and Moiteaux, 26, both from France, did not enter pleas to a charge of fraudulent evasion of duty to the value of between £800,000 and £1m when they appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court. The magistrates ruled the charges are so serious the case should be heard at the crown court.

The pair were released on bail to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court in August when they will enter pleas. Both men have returned to France but they must report to the French police twice a week and stay at their home addresses.
