A CAR wash has been fined for employing illegal workers.

The UK Border Agency has fined Park Hill Car Wash Limited, based in Grange Road in Gosport, £10,000 after catching the business employing the workers.

It is not currently known how many illegal workers were at the firm, which traded as The Car Wash.

The penalty was issued after officers from the agency raided the business on March 28 last year.

Park Hill Car Wash Limited was then dissolved on November 20.

Records show that Grange Road Car Wash Limited is led by the same director and is operating at the site in Grange Road.

A worker at the station in Grange Road said a new manager had now taken over.

The News attempted to contact the director but was unsuccessful.

The UK Border Agency said it handed out 1,200 penalty notices last year collecting £6m in fines.

That includes hundreds of businesses each year that do not carry out right-to-work checks on staff.

The Gosport-based firm was given a chance to prove the checks had been carried out before the workers were employed but did not do so.

Carla Johnson from the agency said: ‘Our officers carry out regular operations throughout Hampshire to target unscrupulous employers who hire illegal workers.

‘Illegal working is not a victimless crime as it cheats the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and potentially exploits some of society’s most vulnerable people.

‘It also deprives legitimate job hunters of employment opportunities.

‘As these fines show, any employer involved in this sort of activity can expect to pay a heavy financial penalty.’

Five other firms in Hampshire were fined between July 1 and September 30 last year, bringing the total fines to £77,500.

Nine illegal workers have been deported from the United Kingdom and the agency is working on the cases of a further eight illegal workers.
