THIEVES stole expensive equipment belonging to contractors working on a transport project.

An earth-compacting machine was taken from a storage container at the Gosport bus rapid transit construction site in Tichborne Way.

It is the second theft of this kind of machine at the site within three weeks.

The stolen compactor was a replacement of another which was taken in a similar theft on March 28. The machine is worth around £3,500.

It is on hire from equipment rental firm Speedy Hire.

The machine was stolen at some point over the weekend between April 15 and April 18.

PC Jerome Kilty said: ‘The people responsible for this crime are clearly targeting the construction site for a project that is of benefit to residents.

‘This kind of behaviour can only make it more difficult for the workers on the site to do their job, and delay this project further.

‘If anyone has information about who took the earth compacting machine, or its current whereabouts, we would ask them to contact us as soon as possible.’

The site is being looked after by construction company BAM Nuttall. The firm is working on the first phase of Hampshire County Council’s bus rapid transit scheme.

Anyone with information should contact Gosport police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
