The attack comes after a similar incident in North End on Saturday evening in which a man used a pickaxe to rob the Co-op store, in London Road, North End. Officers are treating both incidents as separate.

He is described as white, about 6ft tall and aged between 30 and 40. He was wearing a black hoody, black hat, black scarf, light grey groves and tracksuit bottoms with distinctive white markings.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘We’d like to hear from anyone who recognises the man from the description and the CCTV image or anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and witnessed anything suspicious.

‘Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting 44170076972. Alternatively call the anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.’
