A DANGEROUS group of armed robbers has been put behind bars.

Eleven men have been sentenced for their roles in connection with five robberies, and one attempted robbery, of high value watches from Sussex jewellers’ shops between January 2008 and March 2009.

One of those targeted was Austins in North Street, Chichester on February 25, 2009. On that occasion the robbery was unsuccessful.

The six robbers have been sentenced this week, with Billy Johnson, 28, of Sturdy Grove, London and James Stewart, 28, of Maidstone, being sentenced to 14 years.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Ling, of Sussex Police, said: ‘This was an excellent example of forces working together and in particular providing initial intelligence from Sussex to support the Flying Squad team.’
