The arrest was in relation to allegations of bribery between 2011 and 2013. At the time of his arrest he was a consultant for Thames Valley Police.

A statement said: ‘The arrest relates to allegations prior to his work with the force which commenced in 2014.’

A Hampshire police spokesman added: ‘We can confirm that the 57-year-old man arrested by City of London police also carried out work for Hampshire Constabulary.

‘The alleged offences pre-date this time. An internal review is being conducted as a part of due diligence.’
