AN UNLUCKY assault suspect is in custody today – after being arrested by Hampshire’s top policeman.

Chief Constable Alex Marshall was not even in uniform yesterday when – after leaving a meeting in Southampton – he sprang into action to give two of his officers a hand.

Together they detained a 34-year-old man in London Road, near the Giddy Bridge pub, on suspicion of assault and being drunk and disorderly.

The incident took place at around 12.30pm and afterwards Mr Marshall posted on his Twitter feed: ‘Went straight from Local Crim Justice Board meeting to assisting colleague make arrest for assault in street outside. Strategy to practice!’

‘Good working with PC Sukh Nagra who’s just returned to work after a nasty assault. Between us we got the cuffs on correctly.’
