Hampshire suspect is believed to have committed suicide after being released from police custody

A suspect died in an apparent suicide following release from police custody in Hampshire, a new report says.

The report published by the Independent Police Complaints Commission reveals that there were 60 apparent post-custody suicides across the UK in 2015-16, one of which was in Hampshire.

The report also says that there were three incidents of a similar nature in the Sussex area.

No other details have been given for any of the cases.

The 2015/16 statistic on apparent suicides following detention is the fourth highest since 2004/5.

Of the 60 recorded suicides, 22 were following arrests in connection with sexual offences. Thirty-three of the individuals had known mental health concerns.

The IPCC’s annual report also states that 14 people died in or following police custody in the UK in the space of a year.
