Hate crime is '˜unacceptable'

THE crime commissioner has said hate crime is '˜unacceptable' after figures showed it increased after the Brexit vote.

There was a 33 per cent increase in the three months after the EU referendum vote last June 23, compared to the three months prior.

Michael Lane, Hampshire police and crime commissioner, said: ‘I am concerned about any increase in reported crime, particularly such as this which impacts upon vulnerable groups in our community.

‘Any hate crime is unacceptable and addressing this is very important to me; in fact it was the focus of my first specific funding round, and over £100,000 is being invested to tackle hate crime to date.’

He is aiming to commission centres that hate crimes can be reported at.
