He was arrested at an army base in Berkshire today, and military police then raided two homes.
People living next to the house in Wilverley Avenue spoke of their shock when they came home from work this evening to see all the police activity.
One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he was shocked when he saw the officers arrive.
‘I couldn’t believe it when I saw all the cars and vans there,’ he said.
‘At one point there were around six cars parked outside and about eight police officers standing on the porch. Throughout the afternoon they bought out a lot of evidence bags but I can’t think what would be inside.
‘The person who lives there is a really nice person. He seems laid back and I think he goes to football every Saturday.
‘This is such a quiet area, it is strange to think of anything bad happening here.’
Another neighbour, who lives a few doors down, added: ‘I couldn’t believe when I came home and saw all the police officers. There were loads of them, both in uniform and in civilian clothes.
‘They were out of the house for ages and I heard they had been there long before I got home too.’
A Ministry of Defence Police spokesman said: ‘We arrested a 58-year-old male at Arborfield Garrison, near Reading.
‘The arrested man is a contractor to the MoD, not a civil servant or a member of the armed forces.
‘He was taken to a police station in Reading for interview then bailed until May 13.
‘Two residential properties were searched on the West Leigh housing estate in connection with the investigation.’
The spokesman confirmed the man was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images.
