A HERD of 22 horses was rescued after one animal was found dead near Bishops Waltham.
Hampshire Constabulary and the RSPCA first went to the field in Dundridge Lane, near Bishop’s Waltham, earlier this month after receiving a report of neglect.
Officers found the dead animal and another severely ill horse, which was seized and taken away for treatment.
The remaining herd was said to be ‘in an unhealthy state’ and officers monitored them until they were seized on Saturday.
Police used powers under the Animal Welfare Act and the horses were taken into the care of the RSPCA.
An investigation to find the owner or owners is now under way.
PC Sarah Newman said: ‘It was extremely shocking to see these horses in such a poor state of health.’
