A ROBBER who snatched an 83-year-old woman’s handbag is wanted by police.

The victim was visiting a relative in Derby Road, North End, Portsmouth, and was walking in a cut-through in Stanley Road, Stamshaw, when the robber approached her from behind.

The person stole the woman’s bag from the top of her shopping trolley.

The victim had the bag strap wrapped tightly around her hand and she fell to the ground when it was snatched, hitting her head and hip.

The attacker then got into a white van and fled, heading towards Twyford Avenue in Stamshaw.

Police found a white Citroen Berlingo vehicle that they believe was involved in the robbery in Bedhampton.

The vehicle, which has Buchanan written on the side, was reported stolen from Links Lane, Rowands Castle on Tuesday morning.

Detective Sergeant Mark Hall is investigating. He said: ‘This incident has left the woman extremely shaken.

‘It is a terrible crime against an older, vulnerable, woman just before Christmas.

‘I’d appeal to anyone who may have seen what happened and can help us identify the offender, or has any information about the theft of the van and who may have been driving it.’
