Immigration raid at restaurant in Fareham

Home Office officials said the 22-year-old man from Bangladesh was found to have no right to work in the UK after overstaying a visit visa.

It comes after officers raided Sea of Spice in West Street, Fareham, on April 14.

Restaurants in Southampton and Basingstoke were raided on the same day.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We take reports of illegal working very seriously and carry out regular operations to tackle abuse of the system.

‘Illegal working cheats the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and means legitimate job seekers are denied employment opportunities. Employers who flout the rules face a heavy penalty.

‘We rely on information from members of the public and I would urge people to report suspected illegal working to us.’

The restaurant was served with a notice warning that a civil penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker could be imposed.

It will have to pay the penalty unless bosses can show they carried out pre-employment checks.
