PEOPLE are being warned to keep their Christmas presents out of sight.

Sussex Police are urging residents to take simple steps to help protect their property and reduce burglaries.

Tips include hiding any discarded boxes, avoiding piling presents under the tree – particularly if they are by windows – and keeping windows and doors locked at all times.

Residents away from home over Christmas are urged to use automatic timers to switch on lights, or a radio to give the impression someone is at home.

When shopping for presents, gifts should not be left on view in cars and valuables such as mobile phones and satellite navigation systems should not be left on view.

Drivers should park in well-lit areas.

A spokesman said: ‘Thieves will take any opportunity to steal if they see gifts in your car or home.

‘I hope these simple steps to keep all your purchases out of sight and locked away will help towards a joyful merry Christmas.’
