‘Other offences were also identified including careless driving, no tax, speeding and document offences but the primary focus of the operation was on distracted drivers.

‘Seven were in heavy goods vehicles.

‘These figures included cars, vans and HGVs.

‘Older and younger drivers, professionals and non-professional drivers alike.’

Police yesterday focused on the M27 between junctions 2 and 3.

But the officers will be targeting motorways and major A roads through the area in a bid to drive down the number of crashes caused by drivers using mobile phones.

Police caught 15 drivers in just 30 minutes at rush hour.
