A MAN charged with attempting to murder a woman in Portsmouth over Christmas has appeared in court.

Dressed in a dark blue tracksuit and light blue T-shirt, Adam Buxton, 32, spoke only to confirm his identity during his brief appearance at Portsmouth Crown Court.

Buxton, of Stubbington Avenue, North End, Portsmouth, is accused of attempting to murder a 40-year-old woman in the same street.

Police were called shortly after 11pm on Friday, December 27.

Buxton was arrested in Merton Road, Southsea later that night.

The victim was taken to hospital where she received treatment for life-threatening injuries.

It is not yet known whether she has been discharged.

Addressing Judge Roger Hetherington, prosecutor Martyn Booth said: ‘The investigation is still at an early stage, but of course is ongoing.

‘For that reason the prosecution is unable to properly draft a draft indictment.’

Buxton was remanded in custody.

The 32-year-old is due to reappear at Portsmouth Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing in March.
