A 46-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested as part of the investigation into the body found in a bin liner on Southsea beach.
In the early hours of Friday morning police said that someone had been arrested in the Portsmouth area, although they would not confirm where.
It comes after detectives followed up a line of inquiry in Richmond Road, Southsea.
Both entrances of the road were sealed off with tape and cones and officers stood guard.
Police have also said that they have identified the body and that they are trying to contact next of kin.
A post-mortem examination revealed that the victim had suffered a severe and prolonged assault.
Speaking about the arrest, senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Dick Pearson said: ‘This is a significant development in the investigation but there is still a lot of work to do.
‘We continue to appeal to the community to contact us with any information which could assist us, particularly any suspicious activity or people on the seafront.
‘Members of the community who are in the area regularly will know if something or someone is out of place, or notice unusual behaviour.’
