A MAN is under police guard in hospital after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Portsmouth.

Hampshire Police have confirmed that officers were called to Stubbington Avenue in North End shortly after 11pm on Friday.

They said that a 40-year-old woman who had been assaulted was taken to hospital with ‘life-threatening injuries’.

She is now said to be in a stable condition.

Detectives from Hampshire Major Investigation Team are now investigating.

A 32-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested in the Merton Road area of Southsea on Friday night on suspicion of attempted murder. The suspect remains in police custody. He is currently receiving medical attention in hospital.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘Although we are in the early stages of an investigation, there is no information at the moment to suggest a wider risk to the community.’
