ROBBERS who set upon a man in a late-night attack in Old Portsmouth are being hunted by police.

The 38-year-old victim, from Southsea, was walking on the pathway that runs alongside the Royal Garrison Church in Penny Street when a man approached him.

The attacker demanded that he hand over cash – but the victim refused.

He was then assaulted by the first man and two others who joined him.

They fled empty handed.

The victim suffered injuries to his head, face and ribs, in the attack, but did not need hospital treatment.

The attempted robbery happened between 2.50am and 3.15am on Saturday but police have only just released details.

Now they are appealing for help to trace the attackers.

The main suspect is olive skinned and aged in his mid teens to early 20s with short, dark, gelled hair, and a stocky build.

He wore a long sleeved, dark shirt.
