THE theft of some corned beef and laundry gel has cost a man his liberty.

Darren May, of Clive Road, Portsmouth, admitted stealing the goods, worth £64.87, from a Co-op in Albert Road, Southsea, on November 22.

He was sentenced to 90 days in jail by Portsmouth magistrates.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to committing the crime just two days after he was given a suspended sentence for assault by beating.
