A MAN has died following a crash involving the pony and trap in which he was riding and a car.

Police were called to Portsmouth Road, in Bursledon shortly after 11.30pm to reports of a collision involving a Volkswagen Bora and pony and trap.

The 33-year-old man, from Guildford, travelling in the trap suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died a short time later.

His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The driver of the car was uninjured, a spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary added.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident or either vehicle prior to the collision.

Both vehicles were travelling along Portsmouth Road heading towards Hamble.

A police spokesman added: ‘A 28-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody at this time.
