A WOMAN had her handbag snatched by a bike-riding thief.

The 53-year-old was walking along Forton Road, in Gosport, when a man cycled up behind her and snatched the handbag from her shoulder.

After grabbing the bag, the cyclist rode off along Russell Street.

The theft took place on Monday at 6pm outside the Charcoal Grill kebab shop.

The suspect was aged about 25. He was white, with short, dark hair and was stocky.

He was wearing a fawn-coloured jacket and dark trousers.

PC Amanda-Jane Williams said: ‘This is a random theft on a lone woman walking along a busy road in the early evening.

‘Given these circumstances, it appears to be an act of real desperation on behalf of the offender.

‘People should ensure their purses, wallets and handbags are secure as they walk around in public.

‘Often, wearing a handbag strap diagonally across your body can provide a real deterrent to would-be thieves.’

The brown handbag contained a wallet, house keys, glasses, £20 in cash, a debit card and a driver’s licence. The woman was not injured.

Anyone with information should call Gosport police station on 101.
