Man must pay out more than £1,000 as dog injured animal

Philip Whitren, 62, appeared at Fareham Magistrates’ Court charged with being in charge of a weimaraner dog called Dexter which was dangerously out of control and injured a springer spaniel.

Magistrates fined Whitren, of Dickens Drive, Whiteley, £640 for the October 13 offence.

The incident took place in Dickens Drive and saw a Marley, a brown and white English springer spaniel, injured.

Whitren must pay £281.81 in compensation, a £64 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.

Magistrates also ordered that the dog be kept under proper control by being muzzled.

The dog must also be kept on an extended lead in public except when secured in a vehicle.

Whitren was said to have no previous convictions.

The court heard he had shown remorse and gone to lengths to stop the dog’s behaviour.

That included getting it extra training, the court heard.

Whitren was charged under section 3(1) and 4 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

A person guilty of the offence can be jailed, according to the Sentencing Council guidelines.

Whitren’s guilty plea was taken into consideration when magistrates sentenced him.
