POLICE are hunting a man who assaulted a woman and tried to steal her handbag.

The attempted robbery was reported in Southsea after a 27-year-old was attacked while walking alone along Prince Albert Road.

A man tried to grab her handbag, inflicting hand and knee injuries on the woman, before running away.

The assault took place between 8.20pm and 8.25pm on Sunday, and the suspect is in his 20s, 5ft 8in, skinny, with a gaunt, clean-shaven face.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘This was a nasty, unprovoked assault, which has left a young woman shocked, upset and frightened. Police are keen to speak to two witnesses who we believe walked past the attempted robbery while it was taking place.’
