A MAN has been seriously injured after an assault in Portsmouth.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the unprovoked assault outside The Victory pub opposite The Hard interchange.

The 27-year-old victim from Waterlooville was hit more than once in the face by a man he didn’t know, until he fell unconscious to the floor.

He was taken to hospital to receive medical attention for a head injury, which is serious but not life-threatening.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Amanda Waite said: ‘This was an unprovoked and vicious assault.

‘There were quite a few people around at the time so we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the attack or who may know who the offender.’

The assault happened between 3.40am and 3.50am yesterday.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact CID at Fratton Police Station by phoning 101.
