A MAN threatened staff at a supermarket for money.

The man went into the Waitrose store in Stoke Road, Gosport, yesterday afternoon.

Police said the man threatened staff with what was believed to be a hammer.

He went to the tills and demanded money from the staff member.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘Police were called to the store at around 1.55pm yesterday.

‘It had been reported that staff were threatened at a till.

‘Money was demanded but nothing was handed over. No-one was injured.’

Customers shopping in the store after the incident said they were shocked it had happened.

A regular shopper, who did not want to be named, said: ‘I was shocked to hear what occurred because nothing like this has ever happened before.

‘It is quite scary.’

A Waitrose spokeswoman said of the incident: ‘Thankfully no one was injured and we are supporting the police with their investigation.’
