MAGISTRATES have ordered a man to do community service after he was caught using his dead mother’s disabled parking badge.

Richard Bullen changed the expiry date on the blue badge and used it to park his Mercedes in Tonbridge Street, Southsea.

The 44-year-old was caught in May last year during a Portsmouth City Council operation, named Street Smart, to crackdown on blue badge fraud in the city.

Bullen, of Neptune Road, Fareham, pleaded guilty to adapting an article intending to use it in fraud when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard his mother had passed away in 2009 but Bullen had changed the expiry date on the badge to May this year.

Three other charges relating to the fraudulent use of a disabled parking badge were dropped.

Bullen will have to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months.

He was told to pay £100 in costs to the council within two weeks.
