A PROLIFIC thief who has more than 100 previous convictions has been given a suspended sentence.

Darren Elston was arrested after he stole £25 worth of meat from Tesco in Albert Road, Southsea.

At the time of the offence the 40-year-old was subject to a conditional discharge having been caught shoplifting twice in September.

He had stolen £30 worth of meat from the Co-op in Fratton Road, Fratton and perfume worth £70 from Boots in Commercial Road, Landport.

The magistrates also heard that Elston had committed the crime not long after being released from prison.

Elston, of Locksway Road, Milton, pleaded guilty to theft and breaching the conditional discharge when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

He was given a three-month prison sentence suspended for a year after the court heard he had 107 previous convictions for theft.

Elston was also ordered to have 12 months of supervision from the probation service to help him stay out of trouble.
