A THIEF who stole from a man who was walking home after a night out has been jailed for 10 weeks.

Omar Diarra targeted Ashley Tullett in Commercial Road at 4.30am as Mr Tullett was making his way home on his own.

The 25-year-old demanded money from Mr Tullett and then rifled through his pockets, taking his mobile phone and £2.

When the thief walked away Mr Tullett ran to a phone box and called the police but Diarra returned and tried to stop him.

He was arrested at the scene and claimed to police that Mr Tullett had willingly lent him his mobile phone.

Diarra, of Russell Rise, in Luton, pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court following the offence in April.

He had been due to stand trial for robbery but he entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of theft at the last minute.

Jailing him yesterday Judge Roger Hetherington said: ‘You targeted him and demanded money and when he was not able to produce any you rifled through his pockets and took his mobile phone and a £2 coin.

‘This must have been a distressing and worrying time for him.’
