Carl Paddon had been drinking in Nice with missing Kane Leslie on Sunday as the pair celebrated Northern Ireland’s involvement in the competition when Mr Leslie disappeared.

This morning, Mr Leslie, 24, of Milton, Portsmouth, posted a message on Facebook from an internet cafe to say he was safe, but that he had been set upon by thugs and had his belongings taken.

Speaking to The News from Nice, Mr Paddon, of Milton, says he was hugely relieved.

He said: ‘The last time I saw him, was on Sunday night; I was with my friends from Belfast and I went back to the campsite we were staying on and thought Kane was with one of the guys there. But he wasn’t.

‘It’s been a really worrying time, I have been really scared.

‘The atmosphere here is great amongst Northern Ireland fans. But the locals are a serious problem. It’s as if the police want things to kick off.’

This morning it was revealed Russia had been given a suspended ban from the Euros as tensions and violent behaviour grows amongst fans.
