PCSO leads group '˜braving the shave' for friend diagnosed with cancer

A POLICE community support officer is one of 13 people having their heads shaved today after their friend was diagnosed with cancer.

Chris Penfold, of Waterlooville police station, has joined the Brave the Shave campaign in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

He will join 12 others in going bald at the Harvest Home Pub in Denmead tonight. One fellow fundraiser is getting his chest waxed for the charity.

Chris, 32, said: ‘It’s going to be horrendous but it’s for a good cause.’

Chris was inspired to ‘brave the shave’ after his close friend Gemma Bourne was recently diagnosed with stage two breast cancer.

Chris said: ‘Gemma just had a little boy, so it was really scary for her. Her hair started falling out after the first session of chemotherapy, so she shaved it all off last week.’

Gemma’s friends are raising money through a raffle which will be held at the pub from 6pm, and are hoping to boost their current fundraising total of £1,400.

Chris said: ‘Everybody’s been really generous. Gem herself is chuffed to bits.

‘It’s also to raise awareness because everybody knows how horrible cancer is.’
