PERVERT Mark Barnes has been jailed after sexually assaulting two young girls.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to 13 charges including three counts of attempted rape between 1985 and 1993.

The affect of the offences have been very far-reaching on both the girls.

Judge Advocate Robert Hill

The other charges included nine counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16, one count of gross indecency with a girl under the age of 14 and a multiple count charge for indecent assault on 20 other occasions on a girl under the age of 16.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard the 58-year-old assaulted his victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on a boat he owned in Lee-on-the-Solent as well as in other areas of Gosport.

Prosecutor Barry McElduff told the court the case came to light after one of the victims learnt Barnes had children and she feared for their safety.

She went to police and told them about the assaults which started when she was about seven. They continued until she was about 13.

Mr McElduff said: ‘The victim heard the defendant had a new family and was concerned about history repeating itself.

‘She said in her victim impact statement that what happened has affected her in her adult life and in her relationships.’

The second victim came forward shortly afterwards and told police Barnes had assaulted her when she was aged between eight and 16.

Defending Nick Tucker said: ‘There is nothing the defendant can do about the lasting significant impact his actions have had and will continue to have on his victims.

‘Pleading guilty was the one thing he could do that would begin to assist them.

‘It was hard for him and he has come to court knowing that the outcome of this hearing will be a custodial sentence.

‘He has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression.’

Judge Advocate Robert Hill said during sentencing: ‘The effect of the offences have been very far-reaching on both the girls.

‘You haven’t had any other convictions since this and I take into account there’s some vulnerability to your mental state.’

Judge Hill gave Barnes, of Gosport Road, Stubbington, credit for his guilty plea and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. He must sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
