THIEVES targeted a man who had withdrawn $4,000 (about £2,500) in cash from a bank.

After leaving Barclays Bank in Chichester the 52-year-old victim went into Clinton Cards in East Street with the money inside an envelope in his jacket pocket

In the shop he was stopped by a woman who handed him a tissue and pointed at his back, saying he had paint on him.

He turned round, took his leather jacket off, and realised there was make-up on it and on his trousers.

He later discovered the envelope had gone.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: ‘This type of distraction theft is very infrequent but we remind people to be aware of the potential for such offences, especially in busy places.’

The theft took place last Wednesday just before 2pm.

The woman was with another woman, both aged in their 50s, and a man, all of whom were described as being of Oriental appearance. More detailed descriptions are being compiled.
