The Volvo driver, a 44-year-old man from Hayling Island, sustained minor injuries for which he was treated at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey, now leading the investigation for Sussex Police, said: ‘We’d like to hear from anyone using that stretch of the A27 who saw the collision occur or who noticed a broken-down goods vehicle on the westbound carriageway.

‘Witnesses, or anyone who has any dash-cam footage showing the stationary vehicle prior to the collision, are asked to contact the Sussex Serious Collision Investigation Unit at [email protected].
