Police are still investigating Halfords tyre fire at retail park in Park Gate that caused homes to be evacuated

POLICE are investigating whether a tyre fire at a retail park in Park Gate was started ‘deliberately or recklessly’ earlier this month.

More than 20 firefighters from five fire stations were called to a blaze in a storage yard in the retail park in Southampton Road, at 8.30pm on Tuesday May 5.

The fire destroyed three Halfords tyre fitting vans in a storage yard and had begun to spread to a nearby house in The Willows, an adjacent private road, when firefighters arrived.

Halfords confirmed that a stock of tyres was destroyed by the fire, and that the tyres had been moved to the locked compound following guidance from Fareham Borough Council.

A spokesman from Hampshire Constabulary said their investigation was ongoing.

He said: ‘The cause of the fire is still unknown, however our enquiries remain ongoing and we will be looking at whether the fire could have been set deliberately or recklessly.’
